Editor's Letter
  Dear readers:

Earlier this year I traveled to Brazil to conduct an investigation into the growing black-market in diamonds. It’s a problem that has reached dramatic proportions, and caused violent confrontations and disruptions to the local economy. The reality on the ground is tense, and demands complex and drastic measures. As diamond exports from Brazil open once again after a six-month hiatus,
Hispanic Magazine investigates the issue (p. 52).
Also from Brazil, a photo essay from Venezuelan photo artist Antonio Briceño, who spent time there with the Kayapo Indians to create yet another spectacular collection of photos for his upcoming book on Latin America’s ancestral tribes (p. 60).
And as the year draws to a close we bring you the best and worst moments, as well as the ones we won’t forget (p. 46).
And of course, our last issue of 2006 wouldn’t be complete without the Hispanic of the Year, the greatest honor bestowed by Hispanic Magazine each year. The selection is based on both personal and professional achievements, as well as community work, positive representation of our culture and of course, outstanding results throughout the year. I must admit, this year the selection was easy.

Five Latin Grammys, toping the charts for much of the year, first with La Tortura and later with Hips Don’t Lie, which also became the most played song in radio in a single week in history, and being selected as the only artists to sing at the World Cup Final, an event televised live throughout the world, are only some of Shakira’s accomplishments this year.
In itself, that is more than most artists accomplish in an entire career, but as if it weren’t enough, she has also managed to make her philanthropic work a priority, spearheading her own foundation aimed at building schools and providing education for thousands of children in her native Colombia. It is a side of her career few know about, and the focus of our cover story (p. 69).
Also in this issue is an interview with marketing guru and presidential campaign advisor Lionel Sosa, who recently released a new book: Think and Grow Rich: A Latino Choice. And music über-producer and entrepreneur Emilio Estefan, talks to us about his latest ventures (p. 76, 80).
And look out for a new addition to our sections bringing you the best in beauty and personal care products, as well as our holiday gift guide. And, as always, the best in cars, home products, travel and gadgets.

Happy New Year!
