Although American footbal might still rule as the televised match of choice, no one can deny that fútbol is beginning to close in. Indeed, American soccer has come a long way, bringing solid talent from Latin America north of the border. The act has not only attracted masses of fans hoping to follow their favorite soccer stars from their home countries, but has also changed the state of the game. Athletes have brought a slower and more deliberate game from playing soccer on a global scale, to this new national game. In this, our annual sports issue, we celebrate the American soccer revolution with an in-depth look at Major League Soccer’s new season (p. 42) and profile Colombian soccer star Juan Pablo Ángel who made his major move to the New York Red Bulls (p. 52). We also reveal the 50 most impressive Latino sports men and women today
(p. 34) and cast our eyes east to Beijing, the site of this summer’s Olympic Games, and to the Latino Athletes who are sure to bring home a medal (p. 46). Lest we forget, that in addition to the sunshine that lures us outside to play (check out the cool new gadgets perfect for game time on p. 28), it also brings Mother’s Day and our run down of crisp, gleaming gifts you might not have considered, but should (p. 30). Your mom will thank you. Enjoy!
