Editor’s Letter

After a historical but unsuccessful
presidential bid, White House hopeful Bill Richardson seems content to return to his home state of New Mexico to finish his term as governor. Or so he told Hispanic columnist Ruben Navarrette, Jr. during an interview as the primaries got underway.
Then again, as perhaps the most experienced candidate on the Democratic ballot, he has yet to be discarded as a possible running mate, a position in which he may prove valuable. And of course, a chance of making history as the first Latino vice president can prove a powerful lure. Richardson has the resume to back it up, and as a Latino, a perceived advantage in attracting coveted minority voters. Of course, he’ll also need to be asked, and to be willing.
For our 2008 Power Issue we evaluate the governor’s chances of playing sidekick on the Democratic ballot (p. 46), and look at the Latinos that will have an impact on the presidential race (p. 49), be it by driving Hispanic outreach efforts, helping candidates shape policies, or throwing their weight behind their party’s candidate.
This year, our yearly Corporate 100 takes on a different tone, as we look past the numbers to find the companies and business leaders who take their social responsibility with the Latino community seriously, in our In Good Company special (p. 31).
On a lighter note, from New York to Colombia, through Miami and Mexico City, follow a journey of contemporary sounds from some of today’s most exciting artists (p. 58), in a blend of sounds from today and days past.
