I order frijoles, they order habichuelas; we
both get the same dish. Clearly adept at navigating the linguistic
disparities among Latinos, the staff at this Colombian joint in
Miami Beach seems extra attentive. The Grammy-winning duo taking
up the corner table can no longer go unnoticed, even at a place
rarely patronized by celebrities of their caliber.
Visibly tired, Eduardo Cabra and René Pérez—the
Puerto Rican-born duo that make up Calle 13—wolf down their
meal while talking about the fairytale-like rise to fame that came
with the success of their first album. Now working on their sophomore
effort, they promise to dissipate the misconception that they are
destined to be a perennial reggeatón group (p. 66).
This month, in our annual Music Issue, Hispanic Magazine visits
with norteño legends Los Tigres del Norte in Brooklyn, New
York, where they packed the house at the Bedford Armory (p. 70).
And last but not least, Los Lonely Boys go to the movies with the
release of their new DVD (p. 56), and we list 10 tune-makers you
just have to know (p. 60).
We welcome this year’s baseball season with the 10 teams whose
Hispanic component is crucial to their success (p. 40), and a celebration
of the 60th anniversary since Jackie Robinson joined the majors,
marking a milestone for the civil rights movement and Major League
Baseball’s commitment to diversity (p. 48).
Finally, New Mexico Governor and presidential candidate Bill Richardson
might have the qualifications to run for office, but as we’ve
learned, being qualified only counts for so much in Washington.
We take a close look at his campaign, and his chances of becoming
the first Hispanic to occupy the Oval Office (p. 50).
Enjoy!
