LATINO POWER

Some are household names, while others you might
not have heard of, but regardless of fame, these are the men and women calling the shots in
some of America’s most influential industries. From Real Estate Moguls to powerful politicos to Movie
Moguls these are the people shaping our world.

the ones you know

Emilio Estefan
Music Producer
It’s been 30 years since the Miami Sound Machine launched the career of Emilio (and his superstar wife Gloria), and today the musician-turned-producer shows little signs of slowing down.
2007 Outlook: In 2005 Estefan joined forces with P. Diddy to launch Bad Boy Latino, a label that this year seems exceptionally well poised to capitalize on the growing “urban-Latino” market in the United States. He’s also authoring a book due out this year.

Eva Longoria
Actress/Producer
Besides her roles in Desperate Housewives, Longoria shared screen time last year with Michael Douglas and Kiefer Sutherland in The Sentinel and Christian Bale in Harsh Times. If that wasn’t enough, she helped produce The Alma Awards, which were broadcast again for the first time in three years.
2007 Outlook: With a pending marriage to NBA superstar Tony Parker, 2007 should bring continued success to both her acting and producing career.

Bill Richardson
Governor of New Mexico
Last year Richardson proved his power reached far beyond his state’s borders when he negotiated the release of jailed two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and Chicago Tribune reporter Paul Salopek with the Sudanese Government.
2007 Outlook: The governor and former U.N. Ambassador is a popular figure among constituents as well as his peers in the Democratic Party, and is expected to announce his bid for the 2008 presidential elections.

Salma Hayek
Actress / Producer
Hayek, who first established celebrity status through her acting, is now proving herself an avid powerbroker with the success of her executive produced TV phenomenon Ugly Betty.
2007 Outlook: While Hayek will continue to grace the screen, she has already expanded her production roster with a yet-to-be-named medical-school drama that she recently set up at Fox.

Eddie “El Piolin” Sotelo
Radio Host
As host of one of the top-rated and widely syndicated Spanish-language radio shows in the country, Sotelo has won the masses’ ears and hearts.
2007 Outlook: After becoming a critical figure in rallying the masses to the immigration demonstrations in 2006, Sotelo has proved himself a voice to be reckoned with when it comes to public opinion.

Jorge Perez
CEO and Chairman, Related Group
Both the fame and fortune of this real estate entrepreneur continue to rise, and so do his luxury buildings.
2007 Outlook: With projects announced in both the United States and South America, Perez will most likely continue his vertiginous ascent as one of the richest and most powerful Hispanics in the country.

the ones you DON’t KNOW

Janet Murguía
President and CEO, NCLR
She is in charge of the National Council of La Raza, the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy group in the United States.
2007 Outlook: As president, Murguía has not only been a major advocate and an influential voice in the immigration reform debate, but a major promoter of Latino arts as organizer of the ALMA Awards, which were back on the public spotlight in 2006. Her reach within the Hispanic community makes her a key public figure.

Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón
President, Miami Dade College
He heads the largest higher education institution in the country and is an important promoter of the arts in Miami-Dade County.
2007 Outlook: Dr. Padrón will continue to be a respected and influential voice in education issues in the country.

Carolyn Curiel
Editorial Board Member,
The New York Times
Her wide-ranging experience encompasses jobs as senior speech writer for president Clinton, U.S. ambassador to Belize, writer-producer for ABC News Nightline and her current position at The New York Times.
2007 Outlook: With the ongoing transition in politics, both on a national level and abroad, this year promises to be a challenging, and hopefully rewarding one for anyone who writes on political, social and environmental issues.

Jorge “Pepo” Ferradas
Shakira’s Managing and Marketing Advisor
A former president of Sony Music Sur and Sony BMG Sur overseeing Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay and Paraguay, Ferradas is the man behind the development of Shakira’s career in the U.S. Hispanic market.
2007 Outlook: This promises to be a good year to be in the Shakira business,
as her career and expansion in the U.S.
shows no signs of slowing down.

Ralph Alvarez
President and COO, McDonald’s
It’s been a meteoric rise for Alvarez, who joined the company in 1994 and has since led McDonald’s
exemplary commitment to diversity.
2007 Outlook: As second in command of McDonald’s Corporation, he’s a strong candidate to
take the reigns of the company in the future.

the ones you SHOULD KNOW

Gustavo Santaolalla
Composer and Film Scorer
The Oscar-winning mind behind the heartbreaking score of Brokeback Mountain, is also a Grammy award winning producer of such artists as Juanes, Café Tacuba and Molotov.
2007 Outlook: With the critical success of Babel, it looks like Santaolalla might stick with movies for the time being.

Omar Minaya
General Manager, New York Mets
One of the most powerful men in baseball, Minaya, a former minor league player, began as a scout where he launched the career of Sammy Sosa.
2007 Outlook: Minaya manages the fourth largest payroll in the majors and has managed to field a roster of Latino superstars. Winners of the National League East pennant, expectations are high for the Mets this season.

Silvestre Reyes
Chairman, The House Permanent Select
Committee on Intelligence
Reyes is a border security expert and as such has become an authority in Congress on anything pertaining to border and
immigration legislation.
2007 Outlook: The El Paso Democrat failed his pop quiz on the Middle East when he was unable to differentiate Sunnis from Shiites during his nomination hearing––a costly mistake to his standing with the media and the intelligence community.

Emilio T. González
Director, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services
As the head of USCIS, Gonzáles oversees a force of 15,000 employees and is the czar who implements all-important naturalization and immigration policy.
2007 Outlook: The Democrat-controlled Congress might break the impasse on immigration reform, loosening controls on visas, and thus increasing the workload of the already overburdened USCIS.
